For Immediate Release:
Miami, FL and New York, NY. Porter Contemporary is pleased to announce its participation in the Aqua Art Miami contemporary art fair during Art Basel Week in Miami this December 1-4. The artists exhibited this year in our Booth 124, is a reflection of our international collaborations.
We paired up with Australian gallery, 19Karen, to curate the work of our NY and Australian artists each with a unique perspective on portraiture. Jason Bryant’s paintings explore his fascination with film and skateboarding culture to create mysterious metaphors. Jessica Charlotte travels the hidden regions of the mind where apparitions of strange creatures leave their haunting footprints on her portraits. Jennifer Murray explores themes of gender, sexuality, and sociopolitical power struggles and Johnny Romeo paints superheroes as the Greek pop-culture gods of our time. Come and dive into fresh art by the shores of South Beach, as you re-discover portraiture.

About the Artists:
Jason Bryant's paintings explore his fascination with film, skateboarding culture and the presentation of the self. He was born in 1976 in Wilson, North Carolina and lives and works in New York City. Jason Bryant received his BFA in Painting from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina in 1999, before completing his MFA at Maryland institute College of Art in 2004. He has received a wide array of press concerning his artwork including most recently Juxtapoz Magazine, NY Arts Magazine, American Artist, Volume XI of Studio Visit Magazine (cover) and Thrasher Magazine. His works are in a variety of notable collections including the Howard Tullman Collection in Chicago, IL and the West and Zimberg Collections in New York, NY.
Jessica Charlotte is an artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her work explores the hidden regions of the mind where apparitions of strange creatures form and dissolve in dreams and leave only their haunting footprints on the waking mind. Working in acrylics, Jessica manages to bring to life these exotic, wistful and beautiful images that somehow resonate in the empty spaces in all of us where the child once resided but now, only absence and longing. Jessica's paintings are being increasingly sought after both in Australia and overseas. Becoming widely exhibited, the world within each carefully selected frame reintroduces the appreciative viewer to something perhaps long forgotten that inhabited a place without boundaries.
Jennifer Murray explores themes of gender, sexuality, and sociopolitical power struggles in her work, using totemic animal characters to express her impressions of human life within the decaying and carnal confines of New York City. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University School of Art. Using charcoal, which she describes as a "primal medium," Murray carries us through dreamlike scenarios in which the subjects confront a logical disconnect between themselves and their surroundings. Murray, while encouraging the viewer to react to her drawings and make their own interpretation of these images also reflects her own personal feelings, struggles and desires.
Johnny Romeo is an Australian born painter currently working in Los Angeles who believes superheroes are the Greek gods of our time. Referred to as a bombastic neo-expressionist pure pop painter, his work deals with the way we construct our identities from the vast array of images that pop culture immerses us in. Johnny Romeo has had three sell-out exhibitions in Sydney (March 2010), Perth (June 2010) and Gold Coast (March 2011), selling over 80 works in 2010 alone. His work has appeared in countless magazines, newspapers, and billboards including Vogue, Australian Art Review, Australian Art Collector, Art Monthly Australia, Time Out, Artist Profile, NZ Life & Leisure Magazine, GQ Style Australia, Australian Insite and the Sydney Morning Herald, the Melbourne Age and Perth Sunday Times. He was recently featured in SBS and Foxtel’s new Australian Arts channel STVDIO.
About Aqua Art Miami:
Aqua Art Miami contemporary art fair takes place each December at the Aqua Hotel, 1530 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. The fair began in 2005 as an experimental project to bring west coast galleries and artists to Miami during Art Basel week, and quickly established it's reputation as one of the best hotel art fair in the US.
Based in Seattle, the fair has a distinctly west coast character set off by the balmy indoor/outdoor atmosphere of the Aqua Hotel. Fair organizers continue to seek out vibrant and noteworthy programs in their region as well as the greater USA and abroad, with a particular interest in supporting young dealers and galleries with strong emerging and early mid-career artists.
